The Descendants: The Cuckold Life of America’s Rich Kids

Yet George Clooney shows us in action that when it comes to this whole relationship thing, it’s all about outside factors. The film tells the story of an American C&D generation, playing the main character Matt, a native Hawaiian descendant who has inherited a large piece of land on the island of Hawaii on behalf of his family. Because a commercial company wants to develop Hawaii, Clooney is about to get his hands on a huge fortune.

If you are good looking, rich in your own right and have inherited a large piece of land from your ancestors, what should be the last thing you worry about missing? Women! But George Clooney shows us that when it comes to relationships, it’s all about the outside world.

The film tells the story of an American family that has split up the N generation, with George Clooney playing the main character Matt, a native Hawaiian descendant who has inherited a large piece of land on the island of Hawaii on behalf of his family. Because a business company wants to develop Hawaii, Clooney is about to get his hands on a huge fortune.

But together comes the equally big bad news that his wife has hit her head during an outdoor sport and the doctors have given a recommendation for euthanasia. Just in the last days of his wife’s life, his eldest daughter tells Matt a piece of information that is even more difficult to accept; she has seen her mother cheat on her with her own eyes.

Not knowing whether to be sad or angry, Matt is hell-bent on finding the man who cuckolded him, yet when he goes to the trouble of finding the man, he tells the man, with unexpected calm, to go and see his lover.

The Descendants won the 84th Academy Award for Best Adaptation as well as the Golden Globe that year. George Clooney’s role was instrumental, as this handsome old man with deep eyes, a high nose and a firm chin brings to life in this film the helplessness of a father, the failings of a husband and the sadness of a man who has been abandoned.

The scene where Clooney meets Brian, who cuckolded him, is particularly good; Clooney wants to know the details of what happened between the two of them, but Brian’s recounting of those details only adds more salt to his wounds. When did you start? Where was the first time? How many times in total? seemed to be the universal question.

Any man faced with such a scene would have been unable to contain his emotions, but Clooney held back when confronted with the man who had made his wife abandon him, perhaps in a moment of reflection.

Apart from the emotional pain of the couple, Clooney was also bored by the rebelliousness of his two daughters, the older one who drank and smoked weed and was indifferent to everything, and the younger one, who was only ten years old, who was so quirky that she often did things that were completely out of character for her age.

In fact, a large part of the reason for both his wife’s infidelity and his daughter’s rebellion lies with Clooney, whose job as a lawyer and trustee of his ancestral property leaves him with no time to maintain his family. Having not communicated with his wife for months, and having thrown his eldest daughter off to an aristocratic school, he is the one who should pay some of the price for his actions.

So the film does not show too much condemnation of his wife’s infidelity, death having enabled her to be all but forgiven, but instead focuses on Clooney’s reflection on his own actions, the former him being too lacking in this family. So in leading his two children in the search for his wife’s lover, Clooney and his daughters have time together and sufficient communication to return to their own side when his wife leaves.

None of us will ever know what happens in the next phase of our lives, and like Clooney, he probably would never have imagined before this that his wife would cheat on him with a real estate agent who looked far less than he did. But that’s the reality, all outcomes have a reason, and we tend to overlook the reasons that seem so simple until they happen.
