Southpaw is an American sports film released in 2015 and directed by acclaimed American director Anthony Fuqua. The film tells the inspiring story of a welterweight boxer who enjoys all the glory of his life, who hits a low point and is underestimated by everyone in the outside world to pick himself up and get back to the top of the world again.
When Billy was on top, he had all the glory and glory in the world, but he was surrounded by people who were true to him, except for his daughter and his wife. His manager was only interested in signing Billy to more contracts and more fights, all for the sake of money. And his friends can talk about brothers when he has money, but when he fails, they all disappear one by one. That’s human nature, ugly human nature!
The big twist in this film is Billy’s wife. Billy and his wife have known each other since they were 13 years old and they are very much in love. After an accident, Billy’s wife dies and he is devastated. Billy is no longer invincible on the field either. He performs badly and takes it out on the referee, so he is banned from the game. After losing his only source of income, his life completely collapses, and the manager and coach see this and unceremoniously defect to Billy’s nemesis, the man who was involved in his wife’s death.
In this situation, Billy was denied custody of his daughter, who was sent to an orphanage. His daughter was arguably Billy’s only hope of getting on with his life and during one visit to her, Billy finally got his act together. He found a job at the gym and became close friends with Coach Dick, who begged him to help him get back on the track. Coach Dick teaches Billy a new way of playing the game. The old Billy was a hard hitting, blood for blood fighter, a way to win that was never going to last, Dick teaches Billy to defend and play with his head, and Billy slowly finds a rhythm after hard work. At this point, the previous manager wanted a match between the old and new champions for a gimmick, and by this time Billy had completely transformed and he agreed to the fight.
The fight of the century, a big match between the old and new champions attracted a lot of attention and the fight went down to the last round with each man winning or losing, and in the last minute Billy knocked out his opponent to not only get the win but to avenge his wife’s death. After the fight Billy gave credit to his trainer Dick, who had achieved a spiritual elevation and the fight was not as important to him as winning or losing. His daughter also returned to be Billy’s little lover, who continued to look after him in place of his mother.
In contrast to Billy’s previous managers and coaches, Billy’s brothers at his most desperate times, and Coach Dick, are genuinely there to help him, while the managers and coaches who rely on Billy for money are like rats in a sinking ship after his bankruptcy, stepping on Billy and jumping ship.
Southpaw is not overly melodramatic, and the brutality of the boxing match allows the viewer to feel the passion of the sport, so if you like to watch this kind of inspirational, passionate movie, you can learn about it!
