In the trailer, the two uninvited teenagers accidentally “unleash” a host of familiar monsters from their books, including the Himalayan Yeti, the Wetland Werewolf and the Giant Mantis, at the home of their mysterious neighbour. What this ‘accident’ brings to them and the town will be a whimsical, dangerous and extraordinary adventure. The curious Yeti burns his hand on a light bulb. A fierce werewolf forgets to hunt for a chicken leg. The 60-foot tall Mantis monster is in hot pursuit. Nerdy and friendly looking dwarves with great concealed weapons skills.
A world of whimsy unfolds, so who can sit still knowing that the house next door holds a big secret?
Goosebumps is directed by Gulliver’s Travels director Rob Letterman and stars Hollywood comedy genius Jack Black, fresh-faced Dylan Minnette and Odeya Rush. The film is based on the phenomenal series of novels of the same name by the American master of suspense, R.L. Stine.
The series was first released in 1968 and has sold over 450 million copies worldwide, making it a classic childhood memory that has grown with the post-80s, post-90s and even the post-00s around the world.
The Goosebumps novels are known for their colourful fantasy and suspense elements, the most popular of which is R.L. Stine’s masterful reversal ending.
The film version of Goosebumps not only combines elements of the novels, but also incorporates the author of the original books into the plot.
As the real-life “King of Suspense”, R.L. Stine is often imagined by fans and novelists alike as a mysterious mystery writer similar to Jack Nicholson in The Shining, and the film couldn’t have been better cast than with Jack Black as R.L. Stine.
The film follows Zach, a newly moved high school student, and his friends who accidentally bring the fantastical monsters from Stan’s books into the real world when they accidentally break into their neighbour’s house.
The monsters, which are staggering in number and size, turn the real world upside down. Stan and his daughter must join forces with these young neighbours to battle the monsters.
