The movie-Limitless is about the hero Eddie, a down-and-out writer who by chance acquires NZT-48, a drug that can develop his brain to 100% of its potential, and he can judge the movements of the stock market and multiply his assets tenfold in one day. He can learn to play the piano or any language in three days. This film tells the story of an ordinary man who breaks through the information barrier and fulfils his full vocation.
1. At the beginning of the story, we see the director presenting Eddie as a down-and-out man. His hair is messy, he is depressed, and he is in a state of mourning.
How do we perceive that he is in a state of mourning? There is a part of the human brain called the animal brain, which stores some of our survival instincts that originate from primitive man. One of these instincts is that we can feel the danger of prey ahead in nature, or the beauty of flowers in bloom. Our feelings of energy have been stored until today.
In the same way that people carry an energy field, you can also see in the picture below that Eddie is pleading with his girlfriend not to leave him. His brow is furrowed, his eyes and expression are pleading, a little twisted or in a state of envy, and from the outside the whole person looks rather scruffy, even though at this time he is coming to see his beloved girlfriend. Does he give you a low energy? If we ran into this kind of person in reality, we’d choose to stay away a lot of the time.
When Eddie is not on NZT-48, the film opens with several scenes described. For example, living at home, going to a bar and talking to people, walking in the street. Later on when Eddie has taken NZT-48, the film re-tells these scenes, which are above and below one’s energy level.
After Eddie eats NZT-48, we can also feel his “aura” opening up. We don’t have the means to take NZT-48, but if we want to open up our aura, we can try the scenes in the film.
For example, we can do this by walking a little more upright and increasing our physical activity. You can do it by spending a day or two tidying up your home, and you can do it by spending 20 minutes a day on your grooming.
Another small detail is that when Eddie was telling someone at the bar about his new book when he wasn’t on NZT-48, he could see a special confident glint in his eye. Eddie was on his home turf at that point, radiating his own personal light. Similarly, when we are particularly focused on our studies and concentrating on our work, we are also exuding a special charisma at that time.
2. In this film, Eddie, Eddie’s girlfriend, Eddie’s ex-wife, a loan shark, a syndicate owner, an unscrupulous lawyer, etc., all take NZT-48, which, according to the script, will lead to death if they are weaned off of it. At the beginning of the story, the script cuts off the supply of NZT-48, so it is logical that everyone is doomed.
But each of these people, faced with the same dilemma, goes to their own different script.
Eddie, the hero of the film, knows that his drug is almost finished and he chooses the lab to develop it, and from the second half of the film, he has refined the effects of the drug. Taking control of this drug himself, he manages to become the big winner of the play in a state of omniscience.
The boss of the consortium, who has also chosen a way to counteract this, is to send someone to track down the people who have the drug. He tries to pool the resources of the available medicine and supply it for his own use.
Eddie’s ex-wife, who chose to actively wean herself off the drug by relying on her own willpower. The consequences are rather tragic, from a confident and beautiful goddess to a woman dominated by fear, Joey’s silent heart aches for a minute.
The three characters correspond to three states, creator, predator and sinker. They each represent a different level of energy. I remember in college we had to read a bunch of bibliographies to analyse feminism today. Some of the books were still not easy to find, so some people chose not to do it, others chose to borrow others’ or go ahead a hundred times to find resources for books, others chose to learn about the history of feminism, Chinese and foreign feminist perspectives, their own experiences and so on combined and wrote one out for themselves. At the national level, countries also face a lack of resources, and the main responses taken by each country are different, where the energy levels are different.
When people are faced with a dilemma, they can take a moment and the first thing to think about is is this a problem? Why would I consider this to be a problem.
If Eddie simply feels that there is a lack of medicine, he will not be able to maintain a considerable amount of intelligence later on. Then he rises to the level of having to improve this drug. Just maintain the supply of this drug. Whether it is a problem or a divinely given turning point is worth reflecting, reflecting, reflecting and reflecting again.
3. This film’s hint about Divine Destiny. Destiny can be interpreted as something that is destined to be accomplished, to be happy with it, to be exhausted.
The film talks about two things that Eddie did when he ate NZT-48, firstly, he went to conquer Wall Street and became the leading person in the biggest merger in history. The other thing was to run for Congress. The first thing was supposed to work, but unfortunately it didn’t because the other guy died suddenly, and the second thing, all the film says is that Eddie is working on it.
A small detail buried in the film is that before Eddie took NZT-48, the idea of the book was about a new type of genetic mutant going about building a utopian society. It turns out that at the end of the film Eddie is really a genetic mutant-like person building a society.
I believe we all do a lot of exploring about destiny, and the first question is usually, I don’t know what my destiny is. The film gives us a good hypothesis of what we would like to accomplish, and what you would like to do most, if you had NZT-48, and your intelligence, ability, and drive were no longer a deterrent. With that in mind, can you recall what you have been chasing from your heart in life?
I think this requires a great deal of thought, and as a reminder, Eddie in the film also goes in the wrong direction in his pursuit of his vocation. He goes for the kind of success that the world expects, to have the money and status that the world envies. I’ve asked people around me and many of them want this kind of life, but in reality we often can’t tell if we really want it or if it’s a consequence of the brainwashing we’ve been given by society.
Often we want it more, the satisfaction that comes from fulfilling our vocation, and money and status are just incidental.
Of course, each reader has his or her own thoughts. That’s all I have to say in this edition of Never Ending. I have listed some of the key points below for your reference.
Questions for reflection.
1. When you encounter a dilemma, the first thing you should think about is whether it is a problem. Why do I think this is a problem?
If you had the NZT-48, your intelligence, ability, and drive would no longer be a deterrent, what would you most want to accomplish and enjoy doing?
