Pacific Rim continues the grand worldview of its predecessor, with an updated story and special effects. The film takes place in 2035, the year of the apocalypse. A new generation of mecha warriors, the last and hardest line of defence for mankind, are tasked with the unprecedented task of saving mankind and destroying the beasts. What do we do when our loved ones are attacked and the world we live in is threatened by the end of time? The only way to save our lives is to fight to the death.
This updated version of Pacific Rim is set ten years after the previous film, when the human world was rebuilt. It relies on, but does not stick to, the previous film, and goes far beyond it in terms of co-op, portrayal, storytelling and cosmology. The first upgrades are the alien heralds, which return with a vengeance to slaughter cities. They evolve extremely quickly and can invade human mechs, causing them to mutate, or absorb their abilities. If you attack it with a powerful energy, it can bounce back with a powerful energy, so the difficulty factor of victory escalates. When the apocalypse comes, the heroic dream of saving the world in each one of us will burst forth with endless fighting power through collaboration and resistance. It is this kind of battle that makes the film so exciting and bloodthirsty.
The artwork is superb and the visual effects are stunning, giving the audience a sense of Hollywood thrill that only a Hollywood film can provide. The human-controlled mecha army has also been upgraded in all aspects to fight against the more powerful monsters. The story is smooth and fast-paced, the special effects are outstanding, the plot is unobtrusive, and the action design and mechs have a new look and feel of a mysterious future world.
The film has been upgraded, most notably in the mechs, which are more mobile and flexible in their fighting techniques, so that the audience feels that they are no longer fighting with the same fists as in the previous film, but with agile fighting techniques. The advanced mechs also need highly skilled pilots to handle them. The trainees come from different countries such as China, the United States, Japan, Russia, Ukraine and Australia, with different backgrounds and experiences, but they must work together to fight the monsters and be the last line of defence for the Earth as the world comes to an end. There are many Chinese actors in the film, with Wong Kai Kit as a young mech pilot who controls a trio of mechs, Zhang Jin as a general who leads his cadets to protect the human world, and Jing Tian as Shao Liwen, the founder of Shao’s company, who is full of justice at heart and very committed to protecting the world from the monsters, in a look that is absolutely stunning.
Young people, the future of the world, and when the apocalyptic crisis strikes, young people from all over the world must stand up and be brave enough to take on the responsibility of saving the living. As a viewer, you must also see yourself in their shoes. Are you brave enough to stand up to the beast and save the world?
